Clear and Cold – Avalanche

8th March 2018

Another lovely start to the day, great snow cover and for the most part pretty stable apart from specific aspect locations

Lingering persistent weak layers on North-West to Northerly aspects above 1000m continue to develop and provide uncertainty on many slopes of the same aspect that have not released ?

In the early hours of today another large avalanche released in Coire an t Sneachda – the crown wall was above that of yesterdays avalanche. Again approximately 200m across and a metre or more deep running a long way to the coire floor. Running on the weak layer described over the last 2 weeks. see photo

The avalanche in Coire an Lochain probably released last monday during the storm and has run about 400 metres, finishing beyond the lochain – size 3  or so (can bury a car) again running on the persistent weak layer. see photo
