More Snow

4th April 2018

A significant amount of snow has fallen since yesterday, I would estimate that there is 40 – 50 cm of new in places, off the skis it is often thigh deep.

Very spooky in the whiteout, we stayed clear of any steeper threatened slopes. especially knowing that there is a weak layer at depth. Mostly the snow is pretty soft, the main concern is in steeper locations where the wind may have formed a harder layer of windslab which aids propagation and more widespread avalanche release. However because we could not see we could not make good route choice, and so stuck to simple terrain.

Navigating into the whiteout.

Nothing compares to a map and compass
