Windy with good Snow Cover

17th March 2020

Windy conditions this morning made travel in the mountains tiring to start with, but winds soon eased. The widespread snow cover in the Northern Cairngorms at the moment allows fast travel on foot or on ski. However, an icy snow surface in many places has serious implications for a slide. Fresh snow is forecast over night and through tomorrow which will bring softer under foot conditions where snow accumulates.

Traversing along the moraines in Coire an t-Sneachda allowed a good view of the corrie today. Icy sections clearly visible to the left of the skier pictured.

Icy snow surface in many places makes for serious consequences of a fall.

Widespread snow cover allowed travel around the Northern Corries, Coire an Lochain pictured here. Note signs of recent avalanche debris below ‘The Couloir’ (centre) and ‘Y Gully’ (centre right).

Avalanche debris from an natural avalanche event Saturday 14 March from head wall of Coire Chais at 1100m NW aspect. A size 3 avalanche (contains enough debris to bury a car).
