Wintry, Windy and New Windslab

12th March 2020

New snowfall and heavy drifting has produced some unstable windslab in places especially on steep lee aspects where it is sometimes deep and quite widespread. Additionally it is quite weak with a soft layer of snow within it. On shallow angles though this snow provides some some good snowfields if on ski or board, quite arduous if on foot. However many areas remain scoured and firm also.

Significant drifting onto the NW facing crags and the goat track area of Coire an t Sneachda – forming windslab accumulations.

Windslab cracking underfoot due to an underlying weak layer within the snow pack.

A good example of cross loading in Coire an t Sneachda today – a NW aspect at 1000m. White new snow has been blown across the slope and accumulated on the lee or wind sheltered aspect of the grey scoured ridges.

Conditions today at 1000m Significant drifting onto NE,E aspects above 900m producing unstable windslab.
