Return to Winter – with triggered avalanche too!

24th December 2021

A very. sudden return to winter with blizzards and strong winds on the tops during the morning – breaking up around midday leaving a clear but bitterly cold day. New snow pretty good in places but overlies rocks in many places with no base – some rock hard snow in wind exposed places.  Very weak windslab in places but mostly in specific locations and not extensive, however it is easy to trigger, and any slide could carry folk into rocky and bare ground. see image below. On mainly SW through to N aspects.  Gully exits and Coire headwalls will also have similar weak windslab deposits.

A skier triggered avalanche on NW aspect at 1100m. crown wall about 40cm depth, trigger point of skier on L side of crown wall – pretty rock terrain. Skiers unharmed.
