Storm Force south easterlies – and very cold!

25th December 2021

Yup,  south – easterlies always provide really strong winds – with even more strength at lower elevations due to accelerating wind as it descends from the Cairngorm plateau. A fierce and bitterly cold day around -20 with =wind chill. An enormous amount of scouring with only the most sheltered places getting any accumulation. Notably coire rims and into gullies – here there is very poorly bonded windslab – not extensive at all but quite significant nonetheless!

The Northern Cairngorms avalanche team  wish you all a very Merry Xmas – see you in the mountains!

severe gusts with the Fiachail of Snechda in the background

Todays profile – an icy crust overlies a soft marzipan layer which is covering a treacherous brandy soaked fruit cake – best part of the day! Merry Christmas to all
