A significant thaw

19th December 2022

During the past 24 hours the Cairngorms have become a patch work landscape of brown and white.   Overnight, the freezing level rose to well above the summits and a significant thaw set in at all levels.  Much of the snow is now in the burns which are running at full spate.  Heavy rain crossed the mountains through the day leading to further depletion.  Where snow remains, underfoot conditions are challenging.  Soft accumulations are unpredictable with the potential for leg deep plunges into bog, or deep holes in boulder fields.  Some snow fields are firm and easy to cross apart from around the edges where soft.  Cooler temperatures return on Tuesday, this will help to consolidate the snowpack.

Water covers the ice on Loch Morlich giving it a glass like appearance. Stormy in the hills.
