Heavy Drifting at High Elevations

24th December 2022

The SE winds dramatically increased in strength from around midday with some heavy drifting of snow forming deep accumulations on NW to N to E aspects – we noted that the slab is mostly building in steep places below coire rims and gully tops, mostly above 950-1000m or so and in many places overlies a very thin layer of needle shaped crystals which lie on a firm crust. This is a weak layer which the new slab seems to be failing on !. As the afternoon progressed and windslab increased in depth, reports of developing natural avalanche activity were reported to us. These were on North to NE aspects in the N Corries. see SAIS report for further info.
