Stormbound

18th December 2022

Stormy conditions increased as drifting snow enveloped the lower slopes of the Cairngorms, eventually closing the road.  Interesting temperatures this morning.  Minus 6C in the glen at 8.30, this rose to plus 2C within the hour as the Southerly air stream arrived.  Widespread accumulations of windslab continue to develop.  This overlies soft weak layers beneath.  Avalanche conditions are expected to worsen over the next 24 hours due to rising temperatures accompanied by heavy rain at all levels.

At 750 metres looking down the ski area from the bottom of the White Lady run.

At 550 metres. Hard going conditions in the strong winds and deep snow.

Cracks across a low angled NW facing slope at 550 metres, an indication of a weak snowpack.

Conditions in the Cairngorms at 650 metres.
