Wild conditions today

21st December 2022

Strong winds, drifting snow and poor visibility made conditions challenging today. Snow was being transported on very strong South-South-Westerly winds, with moderately bonded windslab developing mainly on North-West through North to East aspects above 1000 metres.  Elsewhere the old snowpack is firm and stable with a thin covering of soft fresh snow. The freezing level rose to around 1000 metres during the afternoon with precipitation turning to rain at lower levels.

Looking into Coire Cas. The best view of the day taken in a small break in the weather.

Looking up Fiacaill a Choire Chais. This was what the visibility was like most of the day, with drifting from right to left  (West to East) across the picture.

Looking down Fiacaill a Choire Cas from the same location. The west facing slopes are scoured with more snow on the East side. Most of this snow is old firm snow with a thin layer of soft fresh snow on top.
