Poor visibility

26th January 2023

There was very limited visibility today. The cloud level was about 800 metres for most of the day. There was drizzle at lower elevations with freezing rain above, everything very quickly became coated in ice. The old snowpack has refrozen above around 850 metres and is well bonded and stable. There is a very thin cover of fresh snow at higher elevations with shallow windslab deposits in a few isolated locations.

Poor visibility on the summit of Cairngorm. Note the rime on the weather station. This has all formed since the temperature dropped yesterday.

Some limited new snow behind boulders near Stac an Fharaidh. New snow is on the sheltered side of the boulders indicating some shallow windslab on South-East and South aspects. Better, (although still limited) visibility on this side of the mountain.

The train at Cairngorm mountain fully operational again.
