Red sky in the morning

19th January 2023

Red sky in the morning shepherds warning.

By 10am conditions quickly deteriorated, with the arrival of heavy snow showers and gale force winds.

Severe drifting with poor visibility, careful navigation was needed even to cross the Cas bowl just away from the main ski area.  Due to the poor visibility it was difficult to see the angle of the slope ahead, a cautious approach was needed to avoid any steep terrain for a more detailed look at developing windslab.

Looking across a frozen Loch Morlich towards Cairngorm, Sneachda and Lochain.

Conditions at 950 metres.

Heading back down, the ski road was closed by late morning due to heavy drifting.
