Arctic airstream

14th January 2024

More snow arrived than expected, significant drifting at higher levels on bitterly cold Northerly winds. Visibility was also very poor, this is typical when the wind blows form the North.  Summit temperatures fell to minus 8C later in the day.  Only a small amount of snow is expected over the next 24 hours, but the intensity of the showers can sometimes be difficult to predict.

Rime ice builds into the wind. A good indicator for recent wind directions.

Poor visibility even at 950 metres.

Strong winds with drifting snow at the top of the ski area. This ski touring group headed back down from here.  Skins left on skis were useful at this point for descending into the strong North wind.
