Thaw

12th April 2024

Very mild, (midday temperature of plus 5 on the summit of Cairngorm), gale force winds.  The perfect combination to thaw the snowpack.  Burns are in spate and water logged coire floors have become more widespread.  Turning cooler on Saturday with the potential for snow during the afternoon.  Currently the snowpack is spring like but firmer conditions are expected to develop through Saturday afternoon, leading to serious run out potential on steep slopes.

A corniced edge partially overhangs the North-West facing slope of Coire an Lochain.

Burns are in spate.

Dark clouds loom over Coire an t-Sneachda before the afternoon showers of rain.

Avalanche debris on this most Easterly coire back wall of Lochain.
