Sunny Today Stormy Tomorrow

22nd November 2024

A glorious day today for those that were lucky enough to take advantage. More snow last night topped up the snow cover throughout the highlands.

Today’s weather and snowpack will bear no resemblance to the expected severe storm that will arrive tomorrow bringing significant change to conditions.

The most significant factor for the Northern Cairngorms area and avalanche forecasters is the Cairngorm plateau feature. For the last week or so Northerly winds have deposited fresh snow onto this vast area. This will supply a ready amount of snow for the South-Easterly winds which will deposit significant windslab onto Northerly aspects – this will be rapid and achieve depth in a very short period of time. The windslab will overlie the current unconsolidated shallow layer of snow which is present on  Northerly  aspects. Avalanches are likely to fail on this weak layer.
