Mild and Murky

28th December 2024

The remaining snow is continuing to thaw with rain and mild temperatures. However, it didn’t feel mild on the summits today with significant windchill and damp conditions making it feel well below 0 degrees celsius, even though the summit midday temperature was 2.6 degrees celsius.

While the avalanche hazard for tomorrow remains low, instabilities will develop throughout the afternoon. The freezing level will drop to around 800 metres and snow is forecast to fall to the same elevation. With the accompanying storm force Westerly winds, isolated pockets of unstable windslab will develop, primarily where overlying the old snow, on North-East, East and South-East aspects above 1000 metres.

The unsettled weather is due to persist through Monday yet there is uncertainty over the exact details and the balance between rain and snow. Keep a close eye on the forecasts!
