Still Thawing

26th December 2024

It was another mild day with the remaining snow continuing to thaw. However, the midday summit temperature on Cairn Gorm was 0.3 C and there were a couple of brief periods when the summit temperature dipped below 0 C. Today might still be classed as mild but it was quite a bit colder than the 7 C which was recorded on 24th Dec!

The visibility was generally good, giving an opportunity to see where the remaining snow lies. It is primarily on North-East to Southerly aspects above 1000m.

Coire an Lochain with some snow remaining, mainly above 1000m on North-East aspects.

Only a few snow patches visible on the walk-in to Coire an t-Sneachda. Most of the snow is now in the burn.

The visibility improved around midday, giving views across the plateau to Beinn Mheadhoin 1182m (on the left on the photo), Loch Etchachan and Derry Cairngorm 1155m (with the summit just in the cloud).
