A monochrome environment

9th January 2025

A day of flat light, poor contrast and limited visibility made today’s observations interesting.  We’ve had a good spell of winds generally from the North-West and tomorrow marks the start of a change.  At higher altitudes, the strong North-Westerlies veer East and decrease in strength to become moderate in strength over the next 24 hours.

Moderate winds are great for the redistribution of unconsolidated snow, especially cold snow.  The expanse of the Cairngorm plateau is currently holding onto a good amount of unconsolidated loose snow, and with the change in wind direction, our existing windslab problem will become more widespread.
