Cold, dry and sunny

27th February 2025

A dry day with some sunny spells on the Northern Cairngorms. The winds were fresh Westerlies with the freezing level around 900 metres, feeling much colder with windchill.

Fresh accumulations of wind drifted snow are present on Easterly apsects above 1000m metres, with the snowpack remaining firm, icy and generally well bonded. Sheets of water ice or very hard snow are present on many of the paths and slopes, these can be avoided but could easily catch out a unweary ski tourer or hill walker.

The steeper slopes and crag aprons are also firm and icy with very serious and unforgiving runouts.

Remaining cold into tomorrow, no precipitation is forecast and the South Westerly winds will gain in strength during the day and re-distribute the snow into wind sheltered locations on North to East apsects above 1000 metres.
