A Beautiful day on Cairngorm

31st March 2025

A real treat to be out on such a beautiful day. Visibility was excellent for the most part, with some stubborn cloud just lingering over the summit of Ben Macdui. High pressure has settled across Scotland bringing dry, sunny and mild conditions.  The summit temperature today rose to a balmy +6 degrees Celsius.

Some snow does remain. Primarily located on corrie rims, steep corrie headwalls and high plateau areas where the snow pack gained most depth on North through East to South-East aspects above 1000m. Looking ahead to the summit temperatures for the week ahead, much of this snow will disappear.

The photos below give a ‘flavour’ of the remaining winter conditions here in the Northern Cairngorms.

One of the larger remaining snow patches. Photo taken on the East aspect of Cairngorm around 1100m.

Looking across from Cairngorm to the Garbh Uisge and Feith Buidhe. Both these shallow corries have an Easterly aspect and an altitude of around 1150m. Snow remains here as historically there would have been a greater depth of snow accumulated during the winter season.

The photo above speaks for itself. Taken at an altitude of 1100m on Cairngorm. Spring has definitely arrived in the Northern Cairngorms…
