Beautiful Day
24th March 2025
Following a damp and cloudy weekend with no visibility, today was a fantastic opportunity to get some photos of the remaining snow cover in the Northern Cairngorms.
The freezing level had dropped overnight leaving the historical, older snow patches very hard and icy. These patches are mainly present (but no exclusively) on steep and shady North-West to North-East aspects above 1000m. Elsewhere there are some quite extensive patches of the more recent snow. This is generally softer and thawing particularly on sun affected aspects. The air temperature in the shade at the snow profile location today (1100m/Westerly aspect/Bain’s Balcony) was +6 degrees Celsius.
Looking across towards Ewan Buttress and No 4 buttress in Coire an Lochain taken from the Fiachaill Coire an’t Snechda. The historical snow highlighted here with the ‘brown streaks’ running down it, had frozen overnight and was very hard and icy with serious runouts.
A general over view of Coire an’t Sneachda taken from the Fiachaill. Snow cover very patchy, but very hard and icy on these Northerly aspects. Serious and consequential runouts.
A close up shot of the top of the Goat Track area.
Looking across from the summit plateau of Cairn Lochain towards the West flank of Cairngorm. Some larger snow patches remain on the plateau. This is newer snow which was softer and diminishing in the warm sunshine.
A view across to the summit of Beinn Macdui taken from the summit plateau of Cairn Lochain. Only patchy, thin snow cover remains.
Looking West across to Braeriach.
Looking South across the Pools of Dee down the Lairig Ghru, Cairn Toul centre, Sgor an Lochain Uaine (Angels Peak) on the right. Lochain Uaine in the corrie below Angels Peak was still frozen.
