Soggy…
23rd March 2025
Today was disappointingly soggy.
There had been fresh snow overnight (when presumably the temperature had been lower), giving a superficial covering on all aspects above around 900m. The fresh overnight snow was greater in depth on the leeward Southerly aspects, so at some point the snow must have been dry enough to be wind transported. However, by mid morning the freezing level had risen to summit level or just above leaving a very moist snowpack.
Only the historical snow was firmer. This is easily identified as ‘grubbier’ looking with vegetation debris littering the surface. Some wet snow instabilities are likely present on steeper terrain. Visibility again hindered photos of the ‘bigger picture’. The following photos will give you a flavour of conditions today. The avalanche hazard is low.
It is said that ‘a picture paints a thousand words’…. Enough said…. Photo taken on a Northern aspect around 1100m on Cairngorm.
A fresh covering of superficial new snow covered the ground above around 900m. This was very quickly thawing.
Some water ice riming was clinging on to the grass at 1100m (but not for long).
Todays snow profile location on a South-East aspect at 1100m on Cairngorm. The depth of the snow pack here was 125cm. A consolidated and stable snowpack.
Looking across Ciste Mhearad. East aspect 1150m. Most of the superficial covering of fresh snow will now have gone, leaving the more historical older snow patches.
Tomorrow (Monday) is looking like a dryer, brighter day with the freezing level rising well above the summits.
