The Great Moss

26th March 2025

Another dry day with the winds gradually strengthening during the day as forecasted.  Yet again the freezing level remained above the highest summits with the remaining snow patches continuing to slowly thaw and diminish.  Mòine Mhòr, the Great Moss, is a huge expanse of ground which lies to the west of the Lairig Ghru.  It has a notorious reputation for being exposed to bad weather and difficult to navigate in poor visibility.  Thankfully, today was pleasant.

The burn lines off the North-West flank of Meall Dubhag.  Normally a reliable venue for some late season ski touring.

The remote Beinn Bhrotain – or is it Monadh Mòr!?!

Still none the wiser!

Sgòr Gaoith (with confidence).

The coires on the Western flank of Braeriach.  Is the Allt Coire Dhondail the longest strip of continuous snow in the Cairngorms?

Very helpful post. I plan to walk in this area at the weekend, and I now know what I may see if good conditions
