More sunshine

3rd April 2025

The high pressure continues and plenty of people were out making the most of the warm and sunny weather in the Cairngorms. There had been a light overnight frost in the valley but any trace of it quickly disappeared. The morning temperature at Loch Morlich was 1 degree Celsius and 3 hours later it was 14 degrees Celsius and continued to rise further in the afternoon. The midday summit temperature on top of Cairn Gorm was 7.8 degrees Celsius.

The remaining snow in Ciste Mhearad. The current snow situation doesn’t bode well for those that use this as a midsummer’s ski venue.

The view from ‘The Saddle’ back up towards Ciste Mhearad and the slopes on the Eastern side of Cairn Gorm.

Looking down towards Loch Avon and across to Beinn Mheadhoin (1182m), taken from the East side of Cairn Gorm.

The Southern Cairngorm hills of Beinn a’ Bhuird (1197m) and Beinn Avon (1171m).

Old ski tracks and the summit of Bynack More. The skier had clearly been maximising the snow. The patch was much wider than it was long so the diagonal line meant a longer time could be had sliding. At this point it could be mistaken for a skinning track, but the turns on the patch above showed that it was a downhill line.

The Loch Avon Basin. From left to right – Stacan Dubha, Càrn Etchachan, Shelter Stone and Stac an Fhàraidh.

An unusually busy Loch Morlich beach for the 3rd April with plenty of people out enjoying the warm sunny weather.
