Better visibility

21st December 2025

The freezing level continues to hover around the highest summits in the Northern Cairngorms.  Above the 1000 metre contour line, it definitely feels like winter with a variety of underfoot conditions but as a general rule, snowpack stability is good with the exception of a few locations as highlighted in the Avalanche Report.  A better day for observations today – photos will give a better idea of general snow cover.

Looking down Coire Raibeirt.

Coire an t-Sneachda.

Unless easily outflanked, cornices becoming an issue in some gully tops.

Looking North-East from Stob Coire an t-Sneachda.

Cornices on steep North facing slopes.

Looking South through to the Garbh Uisge Beag.

Snowfields starting to grow in size.  This was on an East aspect around 1100 metres.
