Variable snowpack

1st December 2025

A pleasant day on the hill with a very variable snowpack.  Everything from slush at 600 metres to snow ice above 1050 metres.  All of yesterday’s fresh snow managed to start the consolidating process in the mild temperatures or was redistributed before starting to consolidate. Nonetheless, snowpack stability is generally good in all locations.  The existing snowpack will continue to firm up as the freezing level gradually lowers.  More snow expected overnight above 900 metres on strengthening winds from the Southern quadrant which will increase a windslab and cornice problem on North-West through North to East aspects above 900 metres.

Recent debris which came down last night from (I’m assuming) cornice collapse

Exit from the top of the Goat Track – not so much as a cornice, more of a steepening with potential at this stage in time

More gully top steepenings with potential
