A busy day in the Cairngorms

31st January 2026

South-Easterly winds continue with light snowfall, this was drifting above 800 metres.  Although conditions were still windy with poor visibility and drifting it was a busy day in the Cairngorms.  The terrain is a mix of firm windslab, icy wind scoured snow ice and softer windslab in the most wind sheltered areas.  Thaw conditions below 600 metres were deep accumulations remain on the lower slopes after yesterday’s snowfall.

The Fiacaill a,Choire Chais ridge at 900 metres.

A rocky feature at 900 metres on the Cas ridge.

On a NW aspect at 1000 metres, cracking underfoot indicating snowpack weaknesses.
