Better visibility

18th January 2026

Great to finally get some visibility.

The fluctuating temperatures have improved snowpack stability.

After the steady precipitation of yesterday morning and the freezing level then rising towards the summits, the resulting period of instability abated as the freezing level dropped overnight leaving a refrozen crust in many areas.  There are however isolated areas of new windslab mostly at the top of northerly facing aspects with associated fragile cornices, (see report for more detail).

(Above) Snow cover on the west side of Cairngorm. Thin, icy with a few rocks poking through.

(Above) Snow cover looking towards Loch Avon.

(Above) Looking into Coire an t-Sneachda.

(Above) Small amounts of drifting snow being blown into the Northerly aspect of Coire an t-Sneachda.

(Above) Avalanche debris on the east side of the Fiacailll of Coire Cas, most likely from a cornice collapse during yesterday’s warming temperatures.
