Snow vis.

2nd January 2026

The bitterly cold North-Westerly airstream continues with snow showers and poor visibility above 800 metres.  Summit temperatures were as low as -9 Celsius over night, -7 during the day.  The down side of a Northerly airflow is that visibility is often poor, which has been the case again today.  Snowfall is expected to continue over the next 24 hours.

Rime ice forming, the feather like structure grows towards the wind, which is a good indication of recent wind direction.

The air temperature at 980 metres.

Travel by snow shoe was helpful, especially as the visibility was so poor, making snow lips and crests impossible to see.

At 800 metres.

Sinking in the snow even with snow shoes.
