Excellent visibility

17th February 2026

After a wild night it turned into a beautiful cold, clear and sunny day in the Cairngorms.  Most of the plateau snow coverage is firm, stable and icy but instabilities are present within the snowpack.  In specific areas, weaknesses can be found within deep deposits and these will remain for the time being.  A big shift in wind overnight will redistribute any unconsolidated snow back into the Northerly aspects.

A remotely triggered avalanche this morning. South-East aspect at 1100 metres.

Carn Etchachan and Shelter Stone with Derry Cairngorm in the background.

A buried Hells Lum.

Cornices around the top of Cairn Lochan.

The buried crags of Coire an Lochain.

Looking across the Lairig Ghru towards Sgor an Lochain Uaine.

The crags of Sron na Lairige.
