Beauty and the beast
7th March 2026
Another beautiful day in the Northern Cairngorms with a beastly wind at higher elevations especially during the first part of the day. As expected heavy drifting occurred during the evening and through most of the day. Despite the abundance of unconsolidated snow, much of this was either ablated or was blown down the hill where it is either slowly consolidating or thawing. However, at higher elevations where this fresh windslab has gained depth, there is now an obvious weak layer above the old, firm snowpack.
