Mild

31st March 2026

A very different picture today in the Northern Cairngorms.  The ongoing thaw has dramatically changed the landscape with the snowpack now soft in most locations.  Only in high shady locations does the snowpack remain firm with softening confined to the surface layers.  Stability has greatly improved in most locations with weaknesses remaining in specific areas.  The mild theme will continue until around lunchtime tomorrow when the freezing level lowers once again and the existing snowpack starts to refreeze.  Further fresh snowfall forecasted down to approx 600 meters on Northerly winds so expect a different picture once again post lunch.

The recent fresh snow has transformed into soggy snow. Only the surface of the old firm snowpack is softening.

Looking across to Beinn Mheadhoin (1182m). Much blacker than yesterday.

Looking down Glen Avon.

Spot height 1082m.

Coire Raibeirt and the North-West cliffs of Stacan Dubha (1013m).

Mess of Pottage.  Isolated patches of the most recent snowfall overlying the older snowpack.

Aladdins & Fluted Buttresses.

Fiacaill Buttress.

Exits above the tridents gullies.
