Optimum winds for windslab development

30th March 2026

Another windy day in the Northern Cairngorms with the summit winds around 50 – 60 mph for the duration. Slightly lower we had the optimum wind speed for windslab to build in sheltered areas and this was obvious today. A monochrome day on the hill, with poor visibility and some respectably sized drifts lurking for the unknowing.  All change tomorrow as the freezing level goes above the summits which will help to slowly stabilise the snowpack once again.

Variable underfoot conditions.

Significant drifting through the evening continued through the day.

Small cornices forming on East-South-East aspects.

Beinn Mheadhoin (11982m).

A’Choinneach (1017m) with Beinn a’Chaorainn (1082m) in the background.

Icy underfoot conditions on exposed plateau areas.

Creag a’Chalamain (787m), Castle Hill (728m) and Airgiod-meall (644m) significantly whiter than yesterday, basking in the sun.

Coire an Lochain.
