Windy from the west

24th March 2026

Overnight the freezing level went well above the summits and Cairngorm weather station registered 3 degrees. Today the temperature gradually lowered to around 1000 metres and really helped improve snowpack stability.

The weather station also recorded wind speeds of 110 mph for a few hours during the night, thankfully the wind eased enough to allow a trip to Coire an Lochain.

The glide crack avalanche problem on the great slab of Coire an Lochain is still there and the hazard remains although colder temperatures will reduce the likelihood of release for the time being.

Cloud stayed above the tops during the morning and there were even a few sunny spells. During the afternoon cloud dropped to around 900 metres and precipitation arrived with it. Fresh snow could be seen down to around 600 metres, mostly on bare ground.

High cloud and strong wind

Snow bridges over streams are a prominent hazard in the spring and avoidance is often the best option.

This snow bridge on the main path to Coire an Lochain demands careful assessment of risk. The bubbling stream below the snow and the consequence of falling through definitely sharpen the senses.

Closer look.
