A Glorious day to end 2019

31st December 2019

A cold day on the tops, which is strange because the freezing level is really well above the summits. Currently we have Inversion conditions with a cold air mass underneath a warm one. The cold air is squeezed between the warm air above and the mountain tops below. Consequently winds will be strong and temperatures will be cooler because we are in the colder air. Later in the afternoon though summit temperatures rose to plus 7 degrees as the summits poked into the warmer air!.

Today was a glorious day with sun and many folk enjoying the respite from the last few days of lashing rain and gales. Be alert though! – Any lying snow is basically bullet hard snow-ice, any trips and slides will result in a big ride, potentially to rocks below.

Have a good Hogmanay and New Year! and here’s to snow!
