A Rare May Day

7th May 2021

We have ran the service into May in previous years but it is unusual to have such significant and sudden snowfall. To provide an avalanche forecast service  following a period of spring conditions with a depleted snowpack is also rare. The persistent arctic airstream is still driving cold temperatures and snow to us. Fortunately at this time of year, the sun provides greater warmth, penetrating the snowpack with the result that any snowpack weaknesses are short-lived.
