Finally winter delivers

19th February 2022

Finally a sunny day with some snow on the ground. Driving into work the forest looked very alpine with the trees holding a lot of snow. On the hill visibility was good with snow cover much improved over the past few days. Good to see lots of people out enjoying the conditions. All change tomorrow with the freezing level forecast to briefly rise above the tops in the early hours, before dropping through the day. Although this will result in a less pleasant day on the hill, I think it will do winter conditions no harm in the longer term.

The Glenmore forest looked very Alpine this morning. There snow cover at all levels. Unfortunately, it won’t be looking like this tomorrow morning.

Evidence of snowpack erosion. It felt like must have got quite windy last night.

A couple of ski tourers near the summit of Cairngorm. Lots of teams were noted out ski touring today.

Hells Lum looking quite white. Although not obvious in the photograph, there had been some avalanche activity (probably yesterday) to the left of the crag.

A climber gears up. Carn Etachcan and the Shelterstone in the background.

Good cover on the plateau.
