Deep snow on the plateau

8th December 2022

  • Winter has well and truly arrived in the Cairngorms.  Freezing temperatures, with snow at all levels, this gains depth with altitude, especially at plateau levels where it’s often knee deep in lee areas; here windslab is beginning to develop mostly on East to South aspects above 1000 metres.  Navigation is tricky due to the combination of deep snow and poor visibility.  Accumulations of deep soft snow is forming at the tops of some North facing gullies and coire rims.

Looking across Loch Morlich towards the Cairngorms.

Difficult navigation at 1100 metres.

At 1100 metres on the E side of Cairngorm.
