Windy again…

31st January 2023

Another wintery and stormy day in the Northern Cairngorms.

Fresh snow overnight and further heavy snow showers during the day coupled with persistent storm force Westerly winds. Conditions on the mountains were challenging with lots of spindrift moving around in the squalls.

The storm force winds have scoured the wind exposed slopes leaving either bare ground or firm and icy older snow. Crampons were required to make any progress over the hard and icy snow. Many of the slopes have serious runouts into nasty looking boulders.

Unstable windslab has continues to gain depth in wind sheltered locations on North-East, East and South-East aspects above 900 metres, with North and South aspects also affected due to cross loading.
More of the same for the next 24 hours, with storm force Westerly winds and further snowfall.

Choire Chais makes a brief apperance from the spindrift.

And then its gone again in another spindrift squall.

Looking at the ‘Traverse’ on Cairngorm, the clouds of spindrift visible.

A brief respite from the spindrift, fresh snow on Meall a’ Bhuachaille

Windslab cracking under foot.

Lots of snow moving around, burying the poles in a few minutes.
