Abrupt temperature rise

23rd January 2024

Storm force winds continue to wreak havoc with the Cairngorms.  The temperatures have done what was expected today with the summit temperature of Cairn Gorm reaching zero degrees Celsius around 1400.  It is expected to remain here until later this evening before making another slow downward journey towards a more amenable 900 metres.  With the freezing level lowering, we will once again return to a more classical winter environment as snow returns throughout the evening.

A morning view of the Northern Coires before becoming engulfed in cloud for vast majority of the day.

Temperature watching showing the summit of Cairn Gorm reaching zero degrees around 1400, and rising.

A break in the clouds late afternoon showing snow loss at lower levels.
