Nice Day to Start the New Year.
1st January 2024
It was a nice cold clear winter’s day, which was a nice way to start the new year. Although from a distance the hills are looking very white, there is not actually a great depth of snow in many places. However, given that just over a week ago there was essentially nothing, what we have is much appreciated. It is all looking a bit more mixed weather wise for tomorrow with strong winds and rising temperatures.

The view from the summit of Cairngorm over to the Ben MacDui. Although looking white, the plateau still has plenty of rock sticking through.

A pair of ski tourers enjoying a cup of tea and some nice wintry sunshine on the summit. There were quite a few ski tourers out and about today.

Looking South-East from the summit of Cnap Coire na Spreidhe towards the wild expanse of Beinn a’ Bhurid.

The view down into Strath Nethy. The snow and sunlight were good at picking up the shelf on the far side of the Strath.

Surface Hoar which likely formed overnight. This can form a weak layer if buried by subsequent snowfalls. However, I suspect that in this case most of it will be destroyed by strong overnight winds before any fresh snow arrives.
