Storm force winds

27th January 2024

A day of gale to storm force South-Westerly winds.  The freezing level was fluctuating at around summit levels.  Some snow loss over the past 24 hours due to thaw conditions.  Well trodden paths above 800 metres are icy in places.  The gusty nature of the wind at coire floor level is making the crossing of boulder fields precarious.  Keep a tight hold of your kit!  During one of the gusts a climber’s helmet was ripped out of his hands never to be seen again.

The Northern corries this morning, in the meantime the local’s face into the wind.

Views into Coire an t-Sneachda.

Mess of Potage, Sneachda.

Cornices contour the coire rim of Lochain.

A group make the most of the snow in a slightly more sheltered area.
