The approaching storm Isha.

21st January 2024

A day of drifting snow and increasing Southerly winds in the Cairngorms.  Another spell of mild wet weather is expected during tonight before it turns cold again with further snowfall

Views of the Cairngorms before being enveloped by clouds and drifting snow.

Walking up towards the Fiachaill ridge before the wind speeds increased.

Skiers on the fiachaill ridge.

A closer look at the avalanche crown wall on the NE aspect of Fiachaill ridge.  This was triggered on Saturday by 3 hill walkers. The snowpack failed on these sugar like crystals below a fragile crust.

These sugar like crystals remain at depth beneath dense windslab and a breakable crust on many aspects.

New accumulations of poorly bonded windslab are developing after Saturday evenings brief thaw.
