Dry and Mild

27th December 2024

It was another mild day in the Northern Cairngorms with the summit temperature being around 4 degrees C for most of the day. The visibility was good looking to the North and East but the summits in the Western Cairngorms stayed in the cloud. There is little snow remaining on West and North aspects, with the largest extent of snow being on Easterly and Southerly aspects above 1000 metres.

Through the day tomorrow, the freezing level is due to drop to around 1000 metres. The existing snow will become firm. As the freezing level drops, precipitation will fall as snow to around 1000 metres, although the new snow amounts are not forecast to be significant.

Inversion conditions this morning with the temperature at Loch Morlich being 2 degrees C and on the summit of Cairn Gorm it was 4 degrees C. The valley cloud pictured above quickly dispersed as did the thin line of cloud along the summit of  Meall a’Bhuachaille.

Cairn Gorm and the upper reaches of Coire Raibeirt.

Stag Rocks, Loch Avon and Beinn Mheadhoin.

Hell’s Lum and Feith Buidhe, where East and Southerly aspects are holding most snow. While Cairn Gorm basked in sunshine for most of the day, Ben Macdui was shrouded in cloud, so this was the extent of the view looking in a Westerly direction.

Easterly aspects holding some snow in Coire Domhain.

Coire an t-Sneachda looking much the same as it did yesterday.
