Whiteout
6th January 2025
Whiteout conditions today made navigating around the plateau challenging, with limited observations. There clearly wasn’t as much snow overnight as forecast, but by the afternoon some heavier bands of showers resulted in a blanket cover of light fresh snow.
Wind speeds are gradually increasing, and this will result in rapid redistribution and windslab development tomorrow. A wild day in the mountains is in prospect, the Avalanche Hazard will be Considerable.

A day of poor contrast and whiteout conditions on the plateau. This is one of the better spells. A Forecaster seen here probing in some new windslab on a South-East aspect at 1110 metres. We chose some quite shallow terrain, given the visibility and a weak snowpack.
