Biting wind

14th February 2025

A very cold day with summit temperatures of -7.0 Celsius combined with strong Southerly winds.  Drifting snow for most of the day, with new accumulations of chalky windslab developing in lee areas.  In some areas this sits on top of soft weaker layers beneath leading to snowpack instabilities.  See the avalanche report for more details.

Cairngorm with the Cas headwall to the right.

Very blowy in Coire an t-Sneachda with drifting snow.

Raised foot prints, this is where soft snow has been eroded and the firm compressed snow remains.

Raised crampon prints.

On a NW aspect at 1080m, windslab cracking underfoot demonstrates snowpack weaknesses.
