Burly winds

23rd February 2025

Another day of unrelenting winds with a max gust of 120 mph recorded on Cairn Gorm summit. With a midday temperature of +0.3°C producing heavy and persistent rain through most of the day, this will undoubtably have reduced the snowpack.

Within SAIS we record winds between 38 – 54 mph as gale force, anything above we record as storm.  A quick cross reference to the Beaufort wind force scale, anything above 64 knots (73.6 mph) is classified as hurricane. Irrespectively it was a windy day.

The high hills remained shrouded by clouds all day.  Meall a’Bhuachaille (right) remained cloud free.

Zero hill views but spectacular water spray across Loch Morlich.

Ducks weren’t even impressed.

A very very empty Cairngorm Mountain car park today. Unruly traffic cones being the biggest hazard.

A fleeting glance into Coire Cas.

Not been much of a winter this year but SAIS details are essential viewing for those of us who venture out every weekend. I have learnt a lot from the SAIS postings and it helps so much with safety, planning and risk management. Thank you for your work each winter.
