Cold and windy, again…

11th March 2025

Another cold and wintery day in the Northern Cairngorms. Cold with limited visibility was the theme for today.

Further snow showers accompanied by gale force North -Westerly winds, along with some impressive riming. The new rime ice has formed on top of the verglas which covers most exposed rocks and boulders. There was very little visibility during the day above 900 metres. The new snow is being re-distributed by the strong winds and is continuing to develop isolated deposits of windslab on South-East, South and South-West aspects above 1000 metres. These are not extensive and can generally be avoided. The old snow patches are re-frozen, firm and icy.

Todays midday temperature was -3.9*C.

It is remaining cold with further snow showers and gale force Northerly winds.

The Cairngorm rock tor at 1221 metres. This is the South-East face, there are some small deposits of new windrifted snow between the rocks.

Windslab on a Southerly aspect at around 1150 metres.

I was not alone! Ptarmigan footprints in the new wind drifted snow.

Feather rime ice forming on to the verglas from yeaterday.

A brief break in the clouds giving a view from Stac an Fharaidh towards the Shelter Stone.

Summit weather station on Cairngorm.
