Milder temperatures.
28th March 2024
Soft drifts were up to thigh deep in lee areas above 700 metres, at times these could be avoided by walking on more scoured terrain. This made progress much easier especially in the gale force head winds. Some snowpack consolidation has taken place, this has been enhanced by milder temperatures. Snowpack instabilities remain at depth especially in steep terrain above 1000 metres.
Today a team of meteorologists from Aberdeen Met Office accompanied the SAIS in order to gain insight into both how the avalanche forecasts are created and to experience severe winter conditions in order to enhance the met office mountain weather forecasts that they produce.
All are mountain enthusiasts and we regularly collaborate to make sure that the daily information that the SAIS receive to produce avalanche forecasts is up to date and relevant to our needs, we all had a really enjoyable productive day.
