A cold and wintry Saturday

11th January 2025

Evening light from Glenmore forest looking toward Cairngorm

Good snow cover continues, tough going on foot if trail breaking, more consolidated and nice snow for skiing on southerly aspects. Many people were out today enjoying the winter conditions. Lighter winds at summit level but stronger on northerly facing slopes as the wind descended from the Cairngorm plateau. Consequently steady drifting has filled in many areas but also left some delicate windslab at higher elevations around coire rims and gully tops on N facing aspects. These accumulations  though are obvious to see and should be avoidable. Hopefully the snow will last another day but all change for Sunday and the start of next week with warmer conditions arriving unfortunately.

On the Cairngorm plateau with the Southern cairngorms beyond.

A party! descending the Fiacaill a Coire Chais

Failing fresh windslab on a NW aspect at 1000m – cracking signifying weak underlying layers.
